High raw mill specific power — Cement Plant Symptom

Specific power is the most honest single measure of how a grinding circuit is performing. When kWh per tonne of raw meal drifts above the design figure on a VRM, neither the operator's set-points nor the lab's quality numbers will show it first — the electrical meter does. Higher feed hardness, worn rollers and table liners, classifier inefficiency, or simply running below the mill's economic loading point can each push specific power up by enough to matter on a quarterly energy report, even when daily operation looks normal.

Why this matters in the raw mill

Raw mill specific power is one of the largest single electrical loads in a cement plant, and the difference between a clean grinding circuit and a degraded one shows up as a recurring overspend that lasts until the next major maintenance window.

Beyond the energy bill, rising specific power often hides a slower output, which forces the mill to run longer to fill the kiln feed silo and pulls the schedule into off-peak tariff windows that worsen the cost. Specific power that drifts upward without a corresponding output recovery is also a symptom that grinding surfaces are nearing their wear limit, and it gives planning time to pre-order liners before the mill is forced down.
